Food Storage Hacks You Need to Know

Whether you're living in an apartment, a townhome, or single family home, food waste continues to be a global challenge. That's why we're sharing a few great food storage tips to make sure your food lasts longer and stays fresher!

Potatoes and Onions Aren't Storage Friends

Keep potatoes away from onions, as they both produce gases that will cause the other to spoil quickly. Your potatoes should also be kept in a cool, dry place – don’t put them in a drawer in the refrigerator with other vegetables – store them in a basket or brown paper bag instead.

Ditch the Food Containers From the Store

You’re better off using a quality plastic food storage container with a sealed lid rather than re-using the "doggie-bag" from the store and restaurant. The goal is to keep your leftover meals fresher for longer and while takeout boxes and grocery store bags can be handy, they’re not water-tight which will make your food spoil faster.

Avocados Are Both Hot and Cold

Sometimes a fruit or vegetable can be stored either in the refrigerator or outside on the counter. An avocado is one of those, which, depending on the situation, either environment is appropriate. If you want to slow the ripening process, put your avocado in the refrigerator. When you're ready for it to ripen, take it out or put it in a brown paper bag!

But, Keep Your Cucumbers on the Counter

Many people have probably been putting their cucumbers in their refrigerators for years; maybe decades. But when you store your cucumbers in the cold, it speeds up the decay process! So unless you're going to eat a whole cucumber in a day or two, it's best to leave it on the counter.

Save the Guacamole With This Water Tip

And that guacamole you made from your avocados shouldn't just be thrown away after your latest party. Here is a handy storage tip to avoid the dark green layer from forming on top.

Store the leftover guac in an airtight container and smooth out the top. Add about a 1/4 inch of water on the top, forming a barrier between the air and the guacamole. When you're ready to enjoy it again, simply pour out the water and enjoy!

Asparagus Loves Acting Like a Flower

Believe it or not, asparagus likes to be stored like freshly cut flowers! So, simply cut the ends off and store them in a couple inches of water until you're ready to cook. Easy as pie!

Hopefully these tips help save you a bit of money in food waste and help you to enjoy your home much more!
