When Brad and Lori Kiewel started searching for their next home, it was a bittersweet journey. Brad, who had experienced a health issue, needed a home without stairs, but they both still wanted their home primely located for entertainment, frequent doctor’s appointments and sharing experiences together.
“We weren’t quite ready for retirement community, but we were looking for a community,” said Lori. “So, about six months ago, I kept looking on Zillow and Realtor.com and started seeing this place on Bishop Drive. Where is this building and what is 55+ active adult? Brad finally said, “they’re having an open house and we need to go.””
Aventura at Greenway Crossing is located at 9065 Bishop Drive, which is better known as the West Des Moines- Waukee area. With the Clive Greenbelt to the north and south, Des Moines Golf and Country Club to the east and boutiques and restaurants like Jethros, Main Street Boutique and BarnTown Brewing to the west, it’s perfectly situated within walking distance to many venues.
“I like the gym and at this point, it’s like having a private gym. We like the location because we can walk to restaurants. We’re in the suburbs but we’re still in the city and within that close distance,” said Lori.
Residents within Aventura are 55 years or older. This active-adult community has amenities also built inside like an on-site fitness center, golf simulator, woodworking shop, an arts, crafts and game room and a library.
“It’s just a community of older adults that like to do the same thing,” said Lori. “We meet every Friday night, the five of us, and we have a cocktail and we bring a dish to share and that’s just the beginning of what the community will offer.”
“It’s nice you can sit and watch, in the middle of things, and the kitchen’s right behind you and it makes a very nice place to sit and partake,” said Brad.
All the amenities come with the price of a home within Aventura. With 11 floorplans, there are homes that range from 1,200 up to 1,800 square feet.
“I like the openness, there are a lot of windows and it’s bright .One of the nice things is being up high, on the third level, is you get to see the sunrise, moon rise and watch the sky and stars come out in the evening and that’s been fun,” said Brad.
Homeowners can choose from first-, second- or third-floor homes. The underground parking and elevators make transporting groceries, gifts, and belongings easy.
“The access we thought we were going to lose by moving from our other home is really still there. We still can do all the things we really enjoy.”
