Station 121 receives Masonry Institute of Iowa Appreciation Award

Des Moines, IA (March 12, 2019) - The Masonry Institute of Iowa (MII) recognized nine architectural projects in Iowa as this year’s recipients of MII’s Appreciation Award.  These designs were recognized because of their use of masonry.

Station 121, located in downtown Des Moines, was one of the nine awardees. The architect was ID8 Architects and the owner of the project was Hubbell Realty Company. CKFairco was the mason contractor on the renovation.

“This project was chosen because the owners decided to renovate an old brick building and bring it back to life,” said Jenny Stephenson, association director for the Masonry Institute of Iowa. ”We applaud them for not tearing it down and rebuilding and instead renovating the beautiful brick facade.”

Russ Bitterman with ID8 Architects and Colleen Ladd with Hubbell Realty Co. were honored during a special awards ceremony during the MII’s annual meeting.

Criteria for the awards include contributions to the masonry industry, community impact, visual appearance, construction detailing and workmanship quality. Both the architectural firm and the owners were recognized with plaques. The MII Appreciation Awards are awarded annually at the MII Annual Meeting.

To receive this award, projects must utilize MII member contractors or material suppliers.  Nominations are accepted by MII members and must have significant masonry assemblies, landscaping or segmental retaining walls. This project was nominated by its mason contractor, CKFairco.

The Masonry Institute of Iowa is the only statewide association with the goal to promote masonry. Founded in 1975, MII’s membership is composed of Masonry Contractors, Brick Manufacturers, Block Manufacturers, Stone Manufacturers, Brick & Block & Stone Distributors, and Suppliers from all aspects of the Masonry Industry.
