Hubbell Trailhead unveiled as new ICON Water Trails site at Gray's Station

DES MOINES, IA (Oct. 11, 2024) – ICON Water Trails is pleased to announce that with a $780,000 investment from Hubbell Realty Company, it has now secured $100.3 million in funding for its transformative water recreation network. This is Hubbell’s second investment in the initiative, securing naming rights for ICON’s future site at the Fleur Dam. The concept, now known as the Hubbell Trailhead, was unveiled last night at the Wild Prairie Showdown, ICON’s joint event with the Great Outdoors Foundation.

ICON’s Hubbell Trailhead is the second whitewater attraction in its downtown development timeline. The access point will feature in-water waveshapers, boat ramp, and recreation and fish passage, among other amenities. Principal Point at the Scott Avenue Dam began construction last spring. Both of these access points will be open for operation as early as 2027. ICON’s Harriet Street site, a third point along the Raccoon River Run, is also underway with a formal ribbon cutting expected next spring.

“We are so honored by and appreciative of Hubbell’s continued leadership and vision,” Stephanie Oppel, ICON Water Trails Executive Director, said. “Years ago, Hubbell pledged ICON’s very first million-dollar gift, and it’s emblematic of Hubbell’s generosity that as we surpass the $100 million mile-marker, it’s through the commitment of this tremendous partner.”

"The Hubbell Trailhead is a pivotal connection point from urban to nature, downtown Des Moines to Gray's Lake, Water Works Park and all our fantastic natural amenities. This is the place where bike trails intersect with water trails, beaches, splash pads, future sports fields, new housing and our capitol city. Very few places in the nation can tout what we can here in Iowa. Hubbell is very honored to play a role in this monumental project," said Rick Tollakson, President & CEO of Hubbell Realty Company.

Hubbell was the first stakeholder to invest $1 million to the ICON Water Trails project.

ICON’s Hubbell Trailhead is set to go to bid this fall. Construction at ICON’s Harriet Street site and Principal Point at the Scott Avenue Dam continue on schedule. For regular construction updates, click here.
