It's how stormwater is managed at five Hubbell communities in Altoona, Carlisle, Grimes, Johnston and Waukee. Rain is captured in bioswales along the sides of the streets, where it "gets filtered through our prairie species and through the root systems before it exits the community," said Nolan Benzing, who manages the conservation communities for Hubbell's homeowners association division.
That deviation from the norm is a common concern for city and county officials considering proposals for conservation subdivisions, Reynolds said.
