Hubbell Realty Company has completed the fourth “Hubbell Extreme Build” at the Ronald McDonald House of Central Iowa. Hubbell worked with more than 100 trade partners, nearly 1,000 volunteers and the Ronald McDonald House of Central Iowa to raise $3 million to make the build a reality. At the beginning of August, Hubbell Construction Services and trade partners tore down the former Ronald McDonald House which was built in 1981. The former house underwent a remodel in the mid-2000s however, the staff felt the 12 rooms, outdated HVAC system and cramped quarters fell short of what Iowa families needed and deserved.
“In the past, we were doing check-ins in the lobby, so if guests were emotional, everyone would see it. Their story wasn’t private,” said Brenda Miller, Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House.
From Sept.11- 22, Hubbell Realty Company and the numerous trade partners worked around-the-clock to complete the 18-bedroom, 18-bathroom house. The new Ronald McDonald House now totals more than 17,000 square feet featuring three kitchens, updated office space and board rooms, multiple family rooms, a $20,000 playground and 31 parking spaces. Sixteen rooms will have two queen-sized beds that can hold up to four family members. There are also two family suites which have three queen-sized beds which are able to hold up to six people.
“Eighteen families a night can stay here,” said Rick Tollakson, President & CEO of Hubbell Realty Company. “If you look at that over the course of a year, that’s theoretically hundreds of thousands of families that could be impacted by just one house.”
During the build, families who rely on Ronald McDonald House services stayed at HCI Care Services so staff was able to provide continued care and support. Families are expected to move into the finished house by Nov. 1, 2017.
